About Sonia

Sonia Davis, Professor of the Practice of Biostatistics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Gillings School of Global Public Health, is a distinguished leader in biostatistical research and clinical trial design. She received her BSPH in Biostatistics with Highest Distinction in 1988, MS in 1990, and DrPH in 1994 from UNC-Chapel Hill, where her dissertation focused on "Statistical Methods for Evaluating Multiple Response Criteria from Bioequivalence and Clinical Equivalence Trials." Early in her career, she served as a research assistant in the Biometric Consulting Lab and Statistician II at the Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center (CSCC). From 1995 to 2012, she advanced through roles at Quintiles Inc., culminating as Senior Director of the Department of Biostatistics. In 2012, she joined UNC as Director of the CSCC and Professor of the Practice, managing data coordination for large-scale studies including the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) and Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL).

Her research specializes in biostatistics for clinical trials, with expertise in missing data methods, mixed models for repeated measures, data monitoring, and outcome analyses in psychiatric and public health research. Davis played a pivotal role in the CATIE trials, co-authoring seminal publications such as "Effectiveness of antipsychotic drugs in patients with chronic schizophrenia" (New England Journal of Medicine, 2005, with Lieberman et al.) and "Effectiveness of atypical antipsychotic drugs for patients with Alzheimer’s disease" (NEJM, 2006, with Schneider et al.). Additional contributions include chapters in "Clinical Trials with Missing Data: A Guide for Practitioners" (2014) and "Antipsychotic Trials in Schizophrenia: The CATIE Project" (2010). She teaches BIOS 844: Leadership in Biostatistics, mentors PhD students on dissertations, and has given invited talks at ENAR, ASA, and other conferences on trial design and statisticians' roles. Recognized with Delta Omega Honor Society membership (1990) and a Doctoral Special Commendation (1993), her work has advanced methodological standards in multicenter trials, influencing cardiovascular, neurocognitive, and Latino health research.
