Dr. Stacy L. Bierwagen is affiliated with James Cook University in Townsville, Australia, where she has held roles including research worker in the College of Science and Engineering and casual teaching. She completed her PhD at James Cook University in 2019 with a thesis examining the functional roles of reef sharks on the central Great Barrier Reef. Her academic background includes a BSc in Biology from Barry University in Florida, USA, and an MSc in Tropical Conservation Biology and Environmental Science from the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

Dr. Bierwagen’s research focuses on movement ecology, conservation biology, functional ecology, and coral reef ecology, with particular emphasis on the ecological roles of predators in reef communities from an ecosystem and trophodynamic perspective. She has contributed to publications including the 2019 paper “Trophic niches determined from fatty acid profiles of sympatric coral reef mesopredators” in Marine Ecology Progress Series and co-authored the 2020 Nature paper “Global status and conservation potential of reef sharks.” Additional work addresses tidal-diel patterns of movement in juvenile rays and diurnal activity patterns of stingrays. She is currently a Fish Ecologist at the Australian Institute of Marine Science, maintaining affiliations with AIMS@JCU projects and supervising research candidates.
