Professor Stefan Bohlander is a Professor in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at the University of Auckland in the Department of Molecular Medicine and Pathology. He holds the Marijanna Kumerich Chair in Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research. He studied medicine at Freiburg University. He began research on chromosomal changes in leukaemia at the University of Chicago, working with Janet Rowley and Manuel Díaz. Returning to Germany, he joined the Institute of Human Genetics at the University of Göttingen. He was Professor of Molecular Haematology and Oncology at the University of Munich and Director of the Institute of Human Genetics at Philipps University Marburg prior to relocating to New Zealand.
Professor Bohlander’s research centres on leukaemia research and genetics, with a focus on precision medicine in cancer care. He has worked with next generation sequencing for more than ten years to discover somatic mutations in blood cancers and germline mutations in inherited conditions. He has authored more than twenty publications based on NGS results and holds board certification in human genetics. He has over thirty-five years of experience in the field. Professor Bohlander is the first holder of the Marijanna Kumerich Chair and contributes to the Leukaemia and Blood Cancer Research Unit at the University of Auckland. His work supports advances in understanding the biology and genetics of acute myeloid leukaemia and related conditions.
