About Stephan

Professor Stephan Winter is Professor for Spatial Information Science in the Department of Infrastructure Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Melbourne. He currently serves as Deputy Head (Academic) of the department and as Discipline Leader in Geomatics. Winter joined the University of Melbourne in July 2003 and was promoted to Professor for Geographic Information in September 2012. Prior to his appointment in Melbourne, he was affiliated with the Technical University Vienna, where he completed his Habilitation in 2001. His academic background includes a PhD (Dr.-Ing.) in Geodesy from the University of Bonn in 1997 and a Master's degree (coursework) from the same institution.

Winter's research interests encompass spatial information science, spatial cognitive engineering, smart mobility, and smart cities. His work addresses human-centered aspects of geographic information systems, including wayfinding instructions enriched with local landmarks, structural salience of landmarks for route directions, modeling costs of turns in route planning, and route-adaptive selection of salient features. He has also advanced geospatial big data handling theory and methods, ontology and semantic interoperability, and conceptualizations of vehicle platoons. Key publications include 'Enriching wayfinding instructions with local landmarks' (2002, International Conference on Geographic Information Science), 'Geospatial big data handling theory and methods: A review and research challenges' (2016, ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing), 'Structural salience of landmarks for route directions' (2005, International Conference on Spatial Information Theory), 'Modeling costs of turns in route planning' (2002, GeoInformatica), 'Landmarks' (2014, Springer), and 'A conceptualization of vehicle platoons and platoon operations' (2017, Transportation Research Part C: Emerging Technologies). With over 11,343 citations on Google Scholar, his contributions have significantly impacted geographic information science, navigation systems, and urban mobility research. Winter has led projects such as the Victorian Future Mobility Sensing Trial and investigations into intelligent mobility on demand.
