About Stephen

Stephen Adelstein is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Central Clinical School at the University of Sydney. He holds qualifications including MB BCh from the University of the Witwatersrand (1977), PhD from the University of Sydney, FRACP, and FRCPA. His career includes positions at the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health (1993-1994), St George Hospital (since 1995), and as Associate Professor in the Discipline of Medicine at the University of Sydney (since 1994). Currently, he serves as Head of the Department of Clinical Immunology and Allergy at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Director of the Central Sydney Immunology Laboratory. Adelstein holds significant leadership roles, including Chair of the Australian Health Ethics Committee (NHMRC, 2024-2027), Chair of the NSW Board of the Medical Board of Australia, and practitioner member of the National Medical Board of Australia. He is also Co-Director of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Institute of Academic Medicine.

Adelstein's research focuses on clinical immunology and allergy, encompassing immune tolerance mechanisms, B and T cell function, primary immunodeficiencies, autoantibodies, autoimmune diseases such as systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease, myositis-associated interstitial lung disease, pemphigus vulgaris, and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder, as well as inflammasome activation, biomarkers, and anaphylaxis. His highly cited publications include 'Altered immunoglobulin expression and functional silencing of self-reactive B lymphocytes in transgenic mice' (Nature, 1988; 2074 citations), 'Interleukin-2 receptor γ chain mutation results in X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency in humans' (Cell, 1993; 1671 citations), 'Induction of self-tolerance in T cells but not B cells of transgenic mice expressing little self antigen' (Science, 1991), and more recent works such as 'A Composite Serum Biomarker Index for the Diagnosis of Systemic Sclerosis–Associated Interstitial Lung Disease' (Arthritis & Rheumatology, 2023). With over 8500 citations on Google Scholar, his contributions have advanced understanding of immune dysregulation and diagnostic approaches in autoimmune and allergic conditions.
