Professor Stephen Greaves is Professor of Transport Management in the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies within the University of Sydney Business School. He joined the University of Sydney in 2004, having previously held a lectureship in transport at Monash University in Melbourne. His academic background includes a BA (Hons) from the University of Leeds, an MSc from the University of Wales, and a PhD from Louisiana State University completed in 2000. Greaves has extensive teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, covering traffic engineering, transport planning and policy, strategic transport modelling, and Geographic Information Systems. He has delivered specialised transportation courses and workshops to industry professionals and served as Director of the Business School Doctoral Studies Program from 2014 to 2017, during which he oversaw growth in student numbers and quality through initiatives in scholarships, coursework, and pastoral care. He has supervised seven PhD students, four as primary supervisor.
Greaves' research focuses on the health, environmental, and safety impacts of transport, new vehicle technologies such as electric and autonomous vehicles, and innovative travel data collection methods. He is recognised as an international expert in travel behaviour research, particularly travel surveys and the links between travel and health. His scholarly output includes 125 refereed publications, with 43 in international journals, and he has secured three major Australian Research Council grants. Key publications include 'Cycling down under: a comparative analysis of bicycling trends and policies in Sydney and Melbourne' (2011, Journal of Transport Geography), 'Public views on legalising e-scooters: Insights from a Sydney case study' (2024), and 'Get BusActive!: Protocol of a single-blinded randomised controlled trial incentivising public transport use for physical activity gain among young people and adults' (2024). He co-chaired a major international conference on survey methods in Australia in 2014 and provides expert media commentary on transport issues. Greaves contributes to public discourse through articles on topics such as e-scooters, cycling infrastructure, and working from home impacts on physical activity.
