Great Professor!
Professor Stephen Huang is a Clinical Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney, affiliated with the Nepean Clinical School and based at Nepean Hospital. He serves as Director of the Nepean Institute of Critical Care Education and Research (NICCER). Huang is recognized as a critical care echo-physiologist with research interests in critical care echocardiography and haemodynamic research and teaching. Additionally, he is an Accredited Medical Sonographer, a Chartered Statistician, and a lawyer. His work focuses on advancing diagnostic and monitoring techniques in intensive care settings, particularly through ultrasound applications.
Professor Huang has an extensive publication record exceeding one hundred items, including peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, and textbooks on critical care echocardiography. He is the main author and editor of Critical Care Ultrasound Manual (2012) and Oxford Textbook of Advanced Critical Care Echocardiography (2020). Key publications include 'Characterising right ventricular dysfunction in COVID-19 ARDS' (Intensive Care Medicine, 2022), which ranked among the top cited articles in the journal for 2023; 'Effects of Intrapulmonary Percussive Ventilation in Nonventilated Supine Patients with Severe COVID-19 ARDS' (Chest Critical Care, 2024); 'Feasibility and safety of intrapulmonary percussive ventilation in spontaneously breathing COVID-19 patients' (Journal of the Intensive Care Society, 2020); 'Is early ventricular dysfunction or dilatation associated with lower survival in sepsis?' (Critical Care, 2013); 'Detecting impaired myocardial relaxation in sepsis with a novel speckle tracking algorithm' (Critical Care, 2017); 'The use of echocardiographic indices in defining and differentiating acute and chronic heart failure' (Heart Lung and Circulation, 2018); and 'Full and simplified assessment of left ventricular diastolic function in COVID-19 patients admitted to ICU' (Echocardiography, 2022). These contributions underscore his impact on cardiac assessment and ventilation strategies in critical illness. Huang directs several NICCER courses, has delivered international lectures on ultrasound, research methodology, and statistics, and has trained at NICCER since 2008. He serves on the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine's European Diploma in Advanced Critical Care Echocardiography (EDEC) Committee and Expert Panel.
