About Stephen

Stephen M. Kosslyn is Professor Emeritus at Harvard University in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, where he previously held the position of John Lindsley Professor of Psychology in Memory of William James. He earned a B.A. in psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1970 and a Ph.D. in psychology from Stanford University in 1974. Kosslyn joined the Harvard faculty in 1977 after serving as an assistant professor of psychology at Johns Hopkins University. At Harvard, he served as chair of the Department of Psychology from 2005 to 2008 and as Dean of Social Sciences from 2008 to 2010.

His research has centered on the neural substrates of visual mental imagery, visual perception, visual cognition, and the science of learning, employing methods including behavioral experiments, neuroimaging, and computational modeling. Kosslyn has authored or co-authored over 350 scientific papers and 16 books, including Image and Mind (1980), Image and Brain (1994), and works on graph design and effective presentations. He has received numerous honors, such as the National Academy of Sciences Award for Initiatives in Research, a Guggenheim fellowship, election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and three honorary doctorates. Following his emeritus status at Harvard, Kosslyn has held leadership roles at Minerva University and currently serves as President and CEO of Active Learning Sciences, Inc.
