Born and raised in Hamilton, New Zealand, Steve Ting transitioned from a career as a marine biologist to science communication, leveraging audio and visual mediums to captivate audiences. At Otago, he has directed productions like the 2012 play 'Explosive Content' in collaboration with the chemistry outreach group, produced Science Idol videos, and participated in events such as the 3 Minute Thesis competition and SJWRI Research Day. Ting's outreach includes leading cyanotype photography workshops with the Otago Chemistry Outreach team, including during their 2018 Taiwan trip, solar print sessions like 'Printing the Blues', and Photography 101 seminars with Wild Dunedin. He recorded evocative sounds for the 2024 Moriori 'Hou Rongo' exhibition at Tūhura Otago Museum and provided technical support—filming, 3D printing, and equipment—for numerous student theses and projects across disciplines. Additionally, he has contributed to science-art initiatives, such as weaving in 'Memory + Mind' and 'Glimpses of Gold', and cultural engagements like sharing his pepeha during Māori Language Week. Through these activities, Ting enhances the impact of science communication at the University of Otago.
