Dr Sumytra Menon is Director of the Centre for Biomedical Ethics (CBmE) at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS). A legal scholar and bioethics educator, her work bridges academic leadership, research, and national capacity building in biomedical ethics. She holds an LLB (Hons) and an LLM. Dr Menon previously served as Senior Assistant Director and Deputy Director at CBmE. Her research focuses on clinical ethics, decision-making capacity, the Mental Capacity Act, organ donation, and ethical issues in healthcare practice. She has contributed to publications including articles in the Journal of Medical Ethics on capacity assessment and co-authored commentary on organ donation challenges in Singapore. Dr Menon leads educational initiatives such as the Certificate in Healthcare Ethics and Law (CHEL) programme and workshops on case analysis for clinical ethics committees. She plays a key role in the MOH–NUS Fellowship for everyday ethics in healthcare and has participated in symposia on paediatric ethics and clinical ethics conferences. Her contributions support national efforts to strengthen ethical decision-making in Singapore’s healthcare sector.

Dr Menon’s professional activities include delivering opening addresses at international clinical ethics conferences and developing resources like the online casebook on making difficult decisions with patients and families. As a legal expert in bioethics, she addresses topics such as disagreement and conflict in medical decision-making, vaccination of individuals lacking capacity, and patients’ responsibilities in healthcare. Her involvement extends to collaborative projects addressing genetic discrimination and public health ethics. Through these efforts, Dr Menon advances the integration of legal and ethical frameworks into clinical practice and policy at NUS Medicine and beyond.
