Professor Balvinder (Sunny) Khambay is Professor of Orthodontics in the School of Dentistry at the University of Birmingham, serving as Deputy Head of School, Academic University Lead of the Orthodontic Department, and Honorary Consultant Orthodontist at Birmingham Dental School. He earned his BDS with Distinction in Clinical Dentistry from the University of Birmingham in 1986 and a PhD from the same university in 1999. Additional qualifications include FDSRCS (Eng) in 1998, MOrth RCS(Edin) in 2002, and FDS(Ortho) RCS(Eng) in 2005. His career trajectory encompasses roles as Lecturer and Senior Clinical University Lecturer with Honorary Consultant status in Orthodontics at Glasgow Dental School from 1998 to 2012, Associate Clinical Professor and Programme Director of Orthodontics at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Hong Kong from 2012 to 2015, and Clinical Chair Professor in Orthodontics at the University of Leeds in 2015. He holds honorary professorships in Orthodontics at the University of Hong Kong and the University of Leeds.
Khambay's research interests center on 3D and 4D imaging techniques for orthognathic surgery planning, facial asymmetry assessment, surgical outcome predictions, and dynamic facial morphology analysis. He has produced extensive publications, such as 'Aesthetic Preferences of the Nasolabial Angle: A Three-Dimensional (3D) Study' (2025, JPRAS Open, with S. El-Habbash and A. Bakshi), 'An innovative analysis of nasolabial dynamics of surgically managed adult unilateral cleft lip and palate patients (UCLP) using 3D facial motion capture' (2023, Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery, with Y. Patel et al.), 'Three-dimensional (3D) dynamic changes in nasolabial symmetry following Le Fort I maxillary advancement in Class III patients' (2025, Advances in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, with A. Bains et al.), and 'Three-dimensional assessment of facial asymmetry in class III subjects' (2022-2023, Clinical Oral Investigations, with D.H. Ajmera et al.). His contributions extend to teaching BDS fourth-year orthodontics, specialist registrar training, and international Masters programs as a visiting professor. Khambay was personally nominated for the BOS TGG Distinguished Trainer Award in 2016 and acts as an international lecturer, examiner, and reviewer for European research grants.
