Susana Fernandes Torres Lopes is a doctoral graduate from the Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier (ITQB NOVA) at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, where she completed her PhD in Plant Sciences. She defended her thesis titled "Dissecting molecular pathways involved in periderm function and differentiation" on February 10, 2025. The work was supervised by Célia Maria Romba Rodrigues Miguel, Professor Associada com Agregação at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. The jury consisted of Rita Sobral Moutinho Abranches, Principal Investigator at ITQB NOVA as president; Olga Serra Figueras, Professora Agregada at Universitat de Girona; Dora Cristina Vicente Batista Lyon de Castro, Professora Auxiliar at Instituto Superior de Agronomia of the University of Lisbon; Liliana Maria Bota Marum, Principal Investigator at Centro de Biotecnologia Agrícola e Agroalimentar do Alentejo (CEBAL); and Pedro Miguel Rodrigues de Barros, Researcher at ITQB NOVA.
Prior to her doctorate, Susana Fernandes Torres Lopes obtained her Master's degree in Forensic Entomology from Universidade de Lisboa between 2010 and 2012, with research on DNA Barcoding for Coleoptera Identification. During her PhD studies, she was affiliated with the Miguel Teixeira Lab at ITQB NOVA, which studies the molecular mechanisms of metalloenzymes such as flavodiiron proteins with oxygen and nitric oxide reductase activities, superoxide reductases, and di-iron site enzymes involved in reactive oxygen species detoxification and energy conservation.
