Dr. Swati Mukherjee serves as an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the Department of Medicine at Alfred Hospital within the Faculty of Medicine at Monash University. She is an interventional cardiologist specializing in coronary intervention and heart disease in women, recognized as one of only 17 female interventional cardiologists in Australia and New Zealand. Mukherjee holds an MBBS, a PhD from Monash University awarded in 2012 for her thesis on the role of oxidative stress in coronary artery disease and its clinical presentations, FRACP, Fellow of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (FCSANZ), and Fellow of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (FSCAI). She completed her cardiology training at The Alfred Hospital and a Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at The Hull and East Yorkshire NHS Trust in the UK. Currently, she is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine at Monash University and a Supervisor of medical students at Notre Dame University at Cabrini. As part of a national leadership group, she advocates for gender equity in cardiology and mentors postgraduate researchers, graduate students, and medical residents.
Her research interests focus on interventional cardiology, coronary intervention, heart disease in women, and age- and gender-based issues in cardiology. Mukherjee has received postgraduate medical research scholarships from the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSANZ) and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), along with the Escalator award in 2023. Notable publications include 'Detection of hypertension and blood pressure phenotypes using ambulatory blood pressure monitoring in women with past hypertensive disorders of pregnancies' (Pant et al., Pregnancy Hypertension, 2025), 'Impact of a Women's Heart Clinic on Cardiovascular Disease Risk Awareness in Women with Past Pregnancy Complications: A Prospective Cohort Study' (Pant et al., Heart Lung and Circulation, 2025), 'Pathophysiology of Myocardial Infarction With Nonobstructive Coronary Artery Disease: A Contemporary Systematic Review' (Boivin-Proulx et al., CJC Open, 2024), and 'Gender Differences in Medical Student Perceptions of a Career in Cardiology' (Perera et al., Heart Lung and Circulation, 2023). She serves as Primary Chief Investigator for a multicenter Phase 3 trial evaluating asundexian versus apixaban for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation patients and acts as a peer reviewer for npj Cardiovascular Health.
