About Takaaki

Takaaki Murakami is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Nutrition at Kyoto University Hospital and the Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto University. He holds a Ph.D. in Medicine from Kyoto University and graduated from Kyoto University School of Medicine. His career at Kyoto University includes serving as Program-specific Assistant Professor from February 2021 and as Assistant Professor from November 2021. Murakami's research centers on pancreatic β-cell imaging and the non-invasive evaluation of pancreatic β-cell mass using nuclear medicine molecular imaging techniques. This work aims to clarify changes in β-cell mass under various clinical conditions, develop novel methods for assessing diabetes states, and advance anti-diabetes treatments targeting β-cell mass protection and recovery. His interests encompass endocrinology, diabetology, insulinoma, functional pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms, diabetes care in the elderly, and rare diseases in endocrinology and metabolism. He collaborates across departments including Radiology, Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, Drug Discovery Medicine, the iPS Cell Research Institute, and the Center for Advanced Research in Human Biology at Kyoto University. Murakami has authored or co-authored peer-reviewed papers in journals such as Diabetes and the Journal of Diabetes Investigation, including studies on quantitative β-cell mass imaging in type 1 diabetes, the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on glycemic control, and imaging for insulinoma localization. He is a member of professional organizations including the Japan Diabetes Society, the Japan Endocrine Society, the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, and the Asian Association for the Study of Diabetes. As a physician-scientist, he integrates clinical practice with research, drawing motivation from patient-relevant questions and interdisciplinary collaboration in Kyoto University's open academic environment.
