Taku Iwami is a Professor in the Department of Preventive Services at the Graduate School of Medicine, School of Public Health, Kyoto University. He holds an M.D. from Gunma University and a Ph.D. in medicine from Osaka University, along with a professional degree in social health medicine from Kyoto University. His academic career at Kyoto University includes progressive appointments beginning as an assistant professor in the Health Science Center, advancing to lecturer, associate professor, and professor roles in the Health Management Division and subsequently the Department of Preventive Services, where he has served since 2022.
Iwami’s research centers on resuscitation science, cardiology, clinical epidemiology, and health promotion, with a focus on out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, bystander-initiated CPR, public-access defibrillation, and implementation of evidence-based practices in emergency and preventive medicine. He has contributed to major studies demonstrating the effectiveness of chest compression-only CPR and nationwide AED dissemination, published in journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine and Circulation. Iwami has held leadership roles in guideline development, including as a member of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) research and registry committee and editorial committees for Japanese Resuscitation Council guidelines. He received the 2021 Ian G. Jacobs Award for International Group Collaboration to Advance Resuscitation Science from the American Heart Association and earlier Young Investigator and other awards. Additional contributions include visiting scholarship at the University of Washington and ongoing work in sleep health, epidemiological studies, and clinical prediction models.
