Tammy Barbé, Ph.D., RN, CNE, is the Dean and Professor at Mercer University's Georgia Baptist College of Nursing, the longest-standing nursing program in Georgia. Possessing more than 25 years of nursing experience, Dr. Barbé earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from the University of South Alabama, followed by a Ph.D. in nursing education from the University of Northern Colorado. She joined the Mercer faculty in 2012 and progressed through significant leadership roles, including student and faculty development coordinator, director of the College of Nursing’s Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Nurse Faculty Loan Program, and associate dean for graduate programs in 2018. Appointed interim dean in May 2022 following the tenure of previous dean Linda Streit, Ph.D., she was named permanent dean on February 20, 2024, by Provost Dr. D. Scott Davis, recognizing her demonstrated leadership in addressing the nursing shortage.
Dr. Barbé's academic interests focus on nursing professional development, nurse educator and clinician competence, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. She has contributed multiple publications and presentations at national and international levels and has been an invited speaker at prominent education conferences, including the Magna Publications Teaching Professor Conference. Her dedication to excellence in nursing education is evidenced by prestigious honors such as the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Elevating Leaders in Academic Nursing (ELAN) Fellowship, AACN Faculty Policy Intensive Fellowship, and Georgia Governor’s Teaching Fellowship. Within the institution, she has received the College of Nursing’s Distinguished Faculty Member of the Year Award and the Susan Sweat Gunby Excellence in Nursing Award from the Pi Gamma Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. In 2019, she was inducted into the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing Alumni Association’s Hall of Honor for her excellence in mentoring. As dean, Dr. Barbé continues to lead innovative educational models to prepare nurses for diverse healthcare needs.
