Tansu Alpcan is a Professor and Reader in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Melbourne, within the Engineering faculty. He earned his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey, in 1998, followed by M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2001 and 2006, respectively. Before joining the University of Melbourne in October 2011, Alpcan served as a senior research scientist at Deutsche Telekom Laboratories in Berlin, Germany, from 2006 to 2009, and as an Assistant Professor (Juniorprofessur) at Technical University Berlin from 2009 to 2011. He leads the Wireless and Information Laboratory (WILAB) and is a member of the Communications and Networks Group.
Alpcan's research focuses on applications of optimization, game theory, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to security and resource allocation problems in communication networks, smart grids, manufacturing, cybersecurity, Industry 4.0, quantum machine learning, and industrial IoT. He is the author or co-author of more than 200 peer-reviewed journal and conference articles, with an h-index of 54 and over 12,000 citations per Google Scholar. Key publications include the book "Network Security: A Decision and Game Theoretic Approach," co-authored with T. Başar and published by Cambridge University Press in 2011, and the co-edited volume "Mechanisms and Games for Dynamic Spectrum Allocation," published by Cambridge University Press in 2014. Alpcan has secured over $6 million in research funding from agencies including the Australian Research Council and Defence Science and Technology Group. His awards include the Fulbright Scholarship in 1999, Best Student Paper Award at the IEEE Conference on Control Applications in 2003, Robert T. Chien Research Award and Ross J. Martin Research Award from the University of Illinois in 2006, and Best Paper Award at IEEE International Conference on Communications in 2010. An IEEE Senior Member since 2013, he has served as Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security (2015-2017), IEEE Transactions on Control of Networked Systems (2018-2020), and the Springer Journal Dynamic Games and Applications since 2021. He has chaired conferences such as the inaugural GameSec in 2010 and supervised 17 PhD students and 3 Masters students to completion, while designing and teaching seven subjects, including contributions to the EEE artificial intelligence specialization.
