Emeritus Professor Terry Lovat serves as Professor Emeritus at the University of Newcastle's College of Human and Social Futures, a position appointed in 2011 following his tenure as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education & Arts) from 2001 to 2011, Dean of the Faculty of Education from 1996 to 2001, and Head of the Department of Education from 1992 to 1995. His academic career at the University began in 1988 as Senior Lecturer in Education, advancing to Associate Professor in 1994 and full Professor of Education in 1995. Lovat holds a PhD and Master of Arts (Honours) from the University of Sydney, Master of Theology and Bachelor of Theology from Melbourne College of Divinity, Graduate Diploma in Religious Education from Adelaide College of the Arts and Education, Bachelor of Education from South Australian College of Advanced Education, and Bachelor of Letters from Deakin University. He has been actively involved in national educational leadership, serving as President of the Australian Council of Deans of Education from 2004 to 2005, President of the NSW Teacher Education Council from 1999 to 2001, board member of the Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education from 2004 to 2007, and member of the National Inquiry into the Teaching of Literacy in 2004 to 2006.
Professor Lovat's research focuses on values education, religious education, theology including Islamic versus Judaeo-Christian perspectives, professional ethics in medicine, bioethics, curriculum theory, and higher education particularly doctoral processes. He has secured over A$2.5 million in research funding, authored or edited 30 academic books such as Second International Research Handbook on Values Education and Student Wellbeing (2023, with R. Toomey, N. Clement, K. Dally), Values based Instructional Scaffolds: Revising Education Systems (2025, with R. Toomey), The Art and Heart of Good Teaching (2019), Values Education and Quality Teaching: The Double Helix Effect (2010, with R. Toomey et al.), and over 200 refereed journal articles and book chapters. His scholarship has earned more than 1,200 Scopus citations and 7,000 Google Scholar citations. Awards include the Affinity Award for Academic Work in 2005 and ranking in the top 0.05% of scholars worldwide by GPS Scholar in 2024. Currently, he is Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Oxford's Department of Education, Distinguished Visiting Professor and UNESCO-Unitwin Partner at the University of Johannesburg, Honorary Professor at the University of Glasgow, and Adjunct Professor at Royal Roads University. He edits the Journal of University Teaching and Learning Practice and serves on the editorial board of the Australian Journal of Teacher Education.
