About Terry

Terry MacDonald is an Associate Professor in International Relations in the School of Social and Political Sciences, Faculty of Arts, at the University of Melbourne. She obtained her Bachelor's Degree with Honours from the University of Melbourne, a Master's degree (coursework and research) from the University of Oxford, and a PhD from the University of Oxford. Prior to her current appointment, MacDonald held the position of Research Fellow and Lecturer at Merton College, Oxford University. She has taught Political Theory and International Relations at the University of Melbourne and several colleges at Oxford University since 2007.

MacDonald's research specializations lie in international relations, encompassing global political legitimacy, stakeholder democracy, political justice in complex global orders, and the role of non-governmental organizations in global justice. Her major publication is the book Global Stakeholder Democracy: Power and Representation Beyond Liberal States, published by Oxford University Press in 2008. Other key works include 'NGOs as Agents of Global Justice: Cosmopolitan Activism for Political Realists' (co-authored with Kate MacDonald), 'The Political Philosophy of Refuge', 'Political Justice in a Complex Global Order: Rethinking Pluralist Legitimacy', 'Democracy versus Security as Standards of Political Legitimacy: The Case of National Policy on Irregular Migrant Arrivals', and 'Sovereignty, Democracy, and Global Political Legitimacy'. She has contributed to edited volumes such as Global Political Justice and projects like 'Building Global Political Legitimacy: How Can We Make Global Institutions More Stable, Effective and Justified'. MacDonald is involved in research on the ethics of Pacific climate displacement. Her scholarship addresses challenges in making global institutions stable, effective, and justified in a pluralist world order.
