About Tien Yin

Professor Tien Yin Wong is a physician-scientist and ophthalmologist affiliated with the National University of Singapore (NUS). He completed his MBBS at NUS as a President's Scholar in 1992, followed by an MPH and PhD from Johns Hopkins University. He received clinical ophthalmology training at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) and retinal fellowships at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the University of Sydney. Wong has held key appointments including Professor and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at NUS, Medical Director of SNEC from 2014 to 2021, Vice-Dean at Duke-NUS Medical School, and Deputy Group CEO (Research and Education) at SingHealth. He previously served as Executive Director of the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI), Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Melbourne, and Managing Director of the Centre for Eye Research Australia. His research focuses on retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration, ocular imaging, and the application of artificial intelligence in ophthalmology and broader health applications. Wong has authored more than 1,500 peer-reviewed papers, including publications in the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, JAMA, and Nature journals, and is a Highly Cited Researcher. He has received numerous awards, including the Singapore Translational Researcher Award (twice), the President's Science Award, the President's Science and Technology Award, the National Outstanding Clinician Scientist Award, election to the U.S. National Academy of Medicine, and fellowships in the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences and the Royal Society. Wong serves or has served on editorial boards of journals including The Lancet Digital Health, NEJM AI, and JAMA Ophthalmology, and holds leadership roles in professional societies such as the Asia-Pacific Ocular Imaging Society and the Asia-Pacific Vitreo-Retinal Society.
