Dr. Tim Davis, Ph.D., LSCSW, serves as Chair of the Department of Social Work and Professor of Social Work at Fort Hays State University (FHSU) in the College of Health and Behavioral Sciences. He joined the FHSU faculty in 2005 as Assistant Professor, advancing to Associate Professor from 2011 to 2018 and full Professor since 2018. He has held the position of Department Chair since 2015 and coordinates the FHSU Addictions Counseling Program since 2012. Previously, he directed the Social Work Program from 2011 to 2016 and served as Field Practicum Coordinator during multiple periods. As a first-generation college student at FHSU, Dr. Davis earned a B.A. in Sociology in 1993, with an emphasis in criminal justice and a minor in political science. He obtained a Master of Social Work from the University of Kansas in 1998, concentrating in clinical social work, and a Ph.D. in Psychology from Northcentral University in 2006, emphasizing health psychology-behavioral medicine. Licensed as a Specialist Clinical Social Worker (LSCSW) in Kansas since 2001, his professional expertise encompasses direct mental health practice, including treatment and rehabilitation of sex offenders, couples and family psychotherapy, employee assistance programs, and work with involuntary clients. He has contributed to macro practice through social work education, program administration, and professional advocacy.
Dr. Davis's extensive clinical career includes roles as Living Skills Educator at High Plains Mental Health Center from 1993 to 1998, where he developed psychosocial programming; Partial Hospitalization Program Manager at Hays Medical Center from 1998 to 1999, launching intensive outpatient services; and Clinical Team Leader at the Sexual Predator Treatment Program in Larned, Kansas, from 1999 to 2002, featured in a Discovery Health Channel documentary. Since 2002, he has practiced part-time as a psychotherapist at Hays Psychiatric Associates (HaysMed), providing bio-psycho-social assessments, individual and family therapy, employee assistance, and behavioral health consultations. At FHSU, he developed and launched the online Bachelor of Social Work program and Master of Social Work program in 2020, cohort BSW programs in Garden City, Dodge City, Liberal, and Colby, and a joint western Kansas MSW with the University of Kansas School of Social Welfare from 2012 to 2018. His scholarly work includes publications such as Davis, T., Radohl, T., Humphry, K., & Benorden, M. (2020). 'Participation in social work membership organizations: opportunities and challenges in a changing society' in the Journal of Policy Practice and Research; Davis, T., Humphry, K., Radohl, T., & Benorden, M. 'Teaching macro practice through the use of experiential instruction and collaboration: a formula to create sustainable community resources' in Contemporary Rural Social Work. Dr. Davis has served on FHSU committees including the Chairs Council, Academy of Academic Leadership, recruitment and scholarship committees, and multiple search committees, as well as state-level boards and advisory councils.
