Mrs. Toni Slotnes-O'Brien serves as Senior Lecturer in Nursing (Nurse Practitioner) within the School of Nursing and Midwifery, College of Health, at Adelaide University. She completed her nursing degree at the University of South Australia in 1993, obtained a Graduate Certificate in Diabetes Management in 2008, and earned a Master of Nurse Practitioner in 2013. Presently, she is undertaking a Graduate Certificate in Mental Health alongside a Master of Health and Clinical Research. With a nursing career spanning over 30 years, she has been an endorsed Nurse Practitioner since 2013, previously holding a Senior Lecturer position at the University of South Australia in Clinical and Health Sciences.
Slotnes-O'Brien operates a Transgender and Gender Diverse health clinic at the Adelaide University Health Clinics, employing the informed consent model for adults aged 18 and older, with expertise in diabetes management and a commitment to equitable healthcare access. She has demonstrated leadership as the former South Australian state chapter chair of the Australian College of Nurse Practitioners (ACNP), Co-Chair of the International Council of Nurses (ICN) Nurse Practitioner education subgroup, a member of the Nurse Practitioner committee for the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC), and a participant in the Australian Nurse Practitioner Academics Collaborative (ANPAC). In 2023, she was named a finalist for the Health Ministers Trailblazer Award recognizing her contributions to transgender healthcare. Her scholarly work includes co-authorship of the article "Cancer screening and prevention in the transgender and gender diverse population: considerations and strategies for advanced practice nurses" (Ziegler, Slotnes O'Brien, & Peters, 2024, Seminars in Oncology Nursing) and "Advancing nursing practice through fundamental care delivery" (Ryder, Kitson, Slotnes O'Brien, & Timmins, 2022, Journal of Nursing Management). Slotnes-O'Brien is affiliated with organizations such as the Australian College of Nurse Practitioners, Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation, World Professional Association for Transgender Health, Australian Professional Association for Trans Health, and the ICN Nurse Practitioner/advanced practice nurse network.
