About Tracy

Tracy Anne Hammond is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Texas A&M University. She earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science with a Finance Technology Option from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She also holds an M.S. in Computer Science, an M.A. in Anthropology, a B.S. in Applied Mathematics, and a B.A. in Mathematics, all from Columbia University. Hammond joined Texas A&M University in 2006. She serves as Director of the Sketch Recognition Lab and Director of the Institute for Engineering Education and Innovation. Her research interests include sketch recognition, perception, cognitive behavior, computer-human interaction, artificial intelligence, concept learning, computer graphics, psychology, anthropology, and the gender gap in computer science. She has received numerous honors and awards, including the IAAI Innovative Applications of AI Deployed Application Award in 2012, the Charles H. Barclay Jr. '45 College of Engineering Faculty Fellow award for 2011-2012, Best Paper Case Study Honorable Mention at CHI 2013, Best Paper Award at the Student Oxygen Workshop at MIT in 2004, and the Clare Boothe Luce Fellowship at MIT in 2000. Selected publications include “LADDER: A Language to Describe Drawing, Display, and Editing in Sketch Recognition” (IJCAI 2003), “PaleoSketch: Accurate Primitive Sketch Recognition and Beautification” (IUI 2008), and “Creating a Perception-based Language for Sketch Recognition by Looking at How People Naturally Define Shapes” (DIS 2010). Hammond has contributed to editorial roles, conference committees, and invited lectures on sketch recognition technologies and engineering education.
