Trevor Tombe is a Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Calgary and the Director of Fiscal and Economic Policy at the School of Public Policy. He received his PhD in Economics from the University of Toronto in 2011, an MA in Economics from the University of Toronto in 2006, and a BBA (Honours) in Finance and Economics from Simon Fraser University in 2005. Prior to his current roles, Tombe served as an Assistant Professor at Wilfrid Laurier University from 2011 to 2012, then joined the University of Calgary as Assistant Professor in 2012, advancing to Associate Professor in 2017 and full Professor in 2021. He has also held positions as Graduate Program Director in the Department of Economics and Research Fellow at the School of Public Policy.
Tombe’s research explores international trade, public finances, fiscal federalism, and macroeconomics, with publications in leading journals such as the American Economic Review and the Canadian Journal of Economics. He is co-author of the textbooks Public Finance in Canada and Macroeconomics, co-editor of the volume Fiscal Federalism in Canada, and co-director of Finances of the Nation. Tombe is a Fellow of the Public Policy Forum and has received awards including the University of Calgary U Make a Difference Award in 2021, the Faculty of Arts Engagement Award in 2020, the Vanderkamp Prize from the Canadian Economics Association in 2019, and the Harry Johnson Prize for Best Paper in the Canadian Journal of Economics in 2016. He actively advises governments on policy issues and contributes to public discussions through op-eds, articles, and media engagement.
