Dr. Ulia Gosart is an Assistant Professor in the School of Information at San José State University, a position she has held since 2022. She received her Ph.D. in Information Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2013 and her M.S. in Library and Information Science from Southern Connecticut State University in 2005. Prior to joining SJSU, Gosart served as a Lecturer in Information Studies at UCLA from 2016 to 2022, Visiting Scholar at Columbia University’s Institute for the Study of Human Rights (2017–2018), Visiting Scholar at UCLA’s American Indian Studies Center (2015–2016), and Lecturer/writing instructor at Loyola Marymount University’s American Cultures Program (2013–2016). Her academic career reflects a commitment to advancing library and information science education.
Gosart’s research specializations encompass Indigenous librarianship, cultural heritage preservation, Indigenous intellectual property rights, and libraries’ roles in wartime resilience, particularly in Ukraine. Key peer-reviewed publications include “Mapping the domain of Indigenous librarianship” (Library Trends, 2024), “Filming the War in the Ukraine: An interview with Volodymyr Sydko on Berehyni at War” (Film International, 2024), “Native Students in Library and Information Science education, 1990–2019: Past trends and suggestions for future advancement” (Library Trends, 2024), “Indigenous librarianship: Theory, practices, and means of social action” (IFLA Journal, 2021), “Protecting Indigenous music in the public domain: HathiTrust digital library case study” (Collection Management, 2023), and guest editorial “The War in Ukraine – a Librarian’s perspective” (Public Library Quarterly, 2024). Additional contributions feature book chapters such as “Indigenous peoples” and “Ethnic violence” in The Palgrave Encyclopedia of Global Security Studies (2019), and “Structural violence against Indigenous peoples: Russian Federation” (2018). Gosart has received the Faculty Excellence Award for Outreach & Collaboration (SJSU iSchool, 2023), SPGE Summer Research stipends (2023, 2024), Scholar Grant (Digital Ethnic Futures Consortium, 2023), and election to the IFLA Indigenous Matters Professional Section Standing Committee (2025). She fosters international impact through partnerships with Ukrainian libraries for cultural preservation and literacy support.
