Varsha Aithala is Assistant Professor of Law at the National Law School of India University, where she also serves as Faculty In Charge of the ICICI Professorial Chair on Business Laws and in charge of Careers and Internships. She holds a B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) from NALSAR University of Law (2007), a Master of Corporate Law from the University of Cambridge (2017), and is a Ph.D. candidate in law at NLSIU. Her doctoral work focuses on legal aid and courts in India. Prior to her current role, Aithala worked as a corporate lawyer in leading Indian law firms with practice experience in India and the United Kingdom, and served as a research fellow and faculty member at the School of Policy and Governance, Azim Premji University. She is qualified as a solicitor in England and Wales and as an advocate in India.
Aithala teaches courses including Corporate Law and The Indian Legal System and Access to Justice. Her research interests include access to justice, law and technology, private law, social investment, and legal system reform. Recent publications include a chapter titled “Can making a law be playful? A case for designing for democratic deliberation in India” in The Socio-Politics of Legal Design and its Epistemic Consequences (Bloomsbury-Hart Publishing, 2026); a co-edited collection with a chapter on “Digitalisation of Indian Courts: Archiving Judicial Data” in Justice Making, Justice Spaces and Justice Users (Goa 1556, 2025); and a co-authored chapter titled “The Lengthening Shadow of the Legal Tech Market on the Supreme Court of India” in Digitalising Courts in Asia: Exploring the Mechanics of Judicial Transformations (Edinburgh University Press, 2025). She has also contributed to works on performance in India’s district courts and reforming the Indian Bar.
