About Vincent

Professor Vincent Gaffney is the 50th Anniversary Chair in Landscape Archaeology at the Department of Archaeological Sciences in the School of Archaeological and Forensic Sciences within the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Bradford. He holds a BA and a PhD from the University of Reading. His research specializations include landscape archaeology, inundated marine paleolandscapes, British prehistory, Croatian archaeology, Mediterranean landscape archaeology and digital humanities. Current projects encompass the ERC Synergy grant Subnordica, the AHRC Taken at the Flood and Unptath'd Waters project, and continued work on the Stonehenge Hidden Landscapes Project, where he led the UK team in geophysical survey and 3D imaging. Previous major projects include the ERC Advanced Grant Europe’s Lost Frontiers on submerged North Sea landscapes, the AHRC Curious Travellers initiative, analysis of the Mesolithic pit alignment at Warren Field Crathes, agent-based modelling of the Battle of Manzikert, and the EPSRC Gravity Gradient Project. Fieldwork has extended to Roman Wroxeter, Diocletian’s Mausoleum in Split, the river Cetina wetlands in Croatia, Forum Novum in Italy, historic landscape characterisation at Fort Hood in Texas, and internet mapping of the Mundo Maya region.

Professor Gaffney has received multiple awards, including the MBE for services to scientific research in 2018, the European Archaeological Heritage Prize in 2013, the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher Education, the 2007 award for Heritage Presentation from the British Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Best Publication prize at the British Archaeological Awards in 2010 for Europe’s Lost World. In 2017 his work at Durrington Walls received the Best Research Project prize. Key publications include the 2022 book Europe’s Lost Frontiers: Volume 1 Context and Methodology (co-authored with Simon Fitch), Visual Heritage: Digital Approaches in Heritage Science (2022), Modelling the Logistics of Mantzikert (2024), and Wroxeter, the Cornovii, and the urban process (2007). He serves on committees including the Society of Antiquaries of London and the Highways Agency Scientific Advisory Panel for the A303 tunnel.
