About Virginia

Virginia Byers Kraus is the Mary Bernheim Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Professor of Medicine, Pathology, and Orthopaedic Surgery at Duke University. She earned a BSc from Brown University, an MD from Duke University School of Medicine in 1982, and a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from Duke University in 1993. She completed her residency in Medicine and fellowship in Rheumatology at Duke University Medical Center. As a practicing rheumatologist, her research centers on the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis, biomarker development for diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring of the disease, as well as post-traumatic osteoarthritis and tissue regeneration responses in joints. She has led studies on molecular markers, inflammation, innate immunity, and extracellular vesicles in osteoarthritis, including collaborative work on proteomic panels and qualification of biomarkers through the OARSI/Foundation for NIH initiative.

Dr. Kraus has served as past president of the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI). In 2019, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from OARSI and was elected to the Association of American Physicians. She directs the Duke Biomarkers Shared Resource and the Molecular Measures Core in the Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development. She is a member of the Duke Molecular Physiology Institute and an affiliate of the Duke Regeneration Center.
