Professor Waljit Dhillo is Professor of Endocrinology & Metabolism at Imperial College London and a Consultant Endocrinologist. He serves as Dean of the NIHR Academy and as Scientific Director for Research Capacity and Capabilities on the NIHR Board. Dhillo studied at St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College, University of London, where he received a BSc in Biochemistry in 1991 and an MBBS in Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics in 1994. He completed a PhD in neuroendocrinology at Imperial College London in 2002.
His research focuses on the endocrine control of body weight and reproductive function, including the role of gut hormones in appetite regulation and the therapeutic potential of kisspeptin and neurokinin B in reproductive disorders and menopausal symptoms. Dhillo was appointed Clinical Senior Lecturer and Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology in 2004 following an NIHR Clinician Scientist Fellowship. He received an NIHR Research Professorship in 2015 and was appointed NIHR Senior Investigator in 2021, with re-appointment in 2025. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (elected 2024), the Royal College of Physicians, the Royal College of Pathologists, and the Higher Education Academy. Dhillo heads the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism at Imperial College London and co-leads the Metabolic and Endocrine theme of the NIHR Imperial Biomedical Research Centre. He has held various leadership roles within the NIHR Academy since 2010.
