Wesley Schultz served as professor of psychology at California State University, San Marcos (CSUSM) from 1997 to 2023, beginning as assistant professor, advancing to associate professor in 2000, and full professor in 2005. From 2014 to 2020, he was Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, overseeing master's and doctoral programs, research centers and institutes, pre-award grant support, faculty professional development, and compliance including the Institutional Review Board, Animal Care and Use, and biosafety. He earned his Ph.D. in Psychology from Claremont Graduate University in 1995 with concentrations in social psychology and statistics, an M.A. in Experimental Social Psychology from the University of Maine in 1992, and a B.A. in Psychology from the University of California, Irvine in 1990. Prior to CSUSM, he held a visiting assistant professor position at St. Lawrence University from 1995 to 1997, teaching courses in social psychology, environmental psychology, research methodology, introductory psychology, and personality psychology.
Schultz's academic interests center on environmental psychology, applied social psychology, conservation behaviors, social norms and influence, quantitative methods, big data, and interventions addressing stereotype threat to broaden STEM participation. He has produced 131 publications, including 106 peer-reviewed journal articles, with an h-index of 74 and over 46,000 citations through 2024. Prominent works include "The constructive, destructive, and reconstructive power of social norms" (Psychological Science, 2007), "Conservation means behavior" (Conservation Biology, 2011), "Patching the pipeline: Reducing educational disparities in the sciences through minority training programs" (Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, 2011), and "Peer influence on household energy behaviours" (Nature Energy, 2020). His research has collaborated with the National Science Foundation, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Energy, Keep America Beautiful, and World Wildlife Fund. Awards encompass the CSUSM Campus-wide Distinguished Service Learning Faculty Award (2013), Psi Chi Distinguished Professor Award (2007), President's Award for Scholarship and Creativity (2000), and Western Psychological Association Early Career in Research Award (2005). Schultz served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Environmental Psychology since 2020, on multiple editorial boards, and president of the International Association of Applied Psychology Environmental Psychology Division. He is a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science and Society for Personality and Social Psychology.
