Professor William Stevenson is a Clinical Associate Professor of Haematology in the Northern Clinical School, Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. He holds the qualifications MBBS, BSc (Med), PhD, FRACP, and FRCPA. Currently, he serves as Head of the Department of Haematology and Transfusion Medicine at Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH), where he also acts as General Haematology Lead and Supervising Pathologist for the NSW Health Pathology Cytogenetic and Molecular Haematology Laboratories, including the Haematological Malignancy Diagnostics Service. As Laboratory Director of the Northern Blood Research Centre at the Kolling Institute of Medical Research, University of Sydney, he drives translational research initiatives. His clinical practice involves multidisciplinary cancer care teams at the Northern Sydney Cancer Centre and North Shore Private Hospital, focusing on blood cancer management.
Dr. Stevenson's distinguished career includes foundational training as a graduate student at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne and advanced postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Leukaemia at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. He maintains active involvement in international and national collaborations, including the HOVON Dutch-Belgian Hematology-Oncology Cooperative Group and the Australasian Leukaemia and Lymphoma Group (ALLG). Leadership roles encompass Past President of the Haematology Society of Australia and New Zealand (HSANZ), longstanding membership on the Leukaemia Foundation’s National Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee since 2008, and prior service on the ALLG Scientific Advisory Committee. His research specializations center on genetic diagnostics, novel therapeutic strategies for haematological malignancies such as acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), as well as inherited bleeding, thrombotic, and platelet disorders. With 144 research works and 2,154 citations on ResearchGate, key publications include "A high-throughput sequencing test for diagnosing inherited bleeding, thrombotic, and platelet disorders" (2022), "GFI1B variants associated with thrombocytopenia" (2022), "Busulfan is effective second-line therapy for older patients with Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms intolerant of or unresponsive to hydroxyurea" (2021), "How comparable are patient outcomes in the ‘real-world’ with those in clinical trials for venetoclax-treated patients with relapsed/refractory chronic lymphocytic leukemia?" (2024), and "Exposure-adjusted adverse events comparing blinatumomab with intensive chemotherapy in children with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia" (2018). Professor Stevenson's contributions have advanced clinical practice, diagnostics, and patient outcomes in haematology.
