Professor Xiaogang Liu is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He holds joint appointments with the N1 Institute for Health and the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering at A*STAR. He received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Beijing Technology and Business University in 1996, his M.S. in Chemistry from East Carolina University in 1999, and his Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from Northwestern University in 2004. He completed postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 2004 to 2006 before joining the NUS faculty in 2006.
Professor Liu’s research centers on luminescent nanomaterials, photon upconversion, nanophotonics, and their applications in bioimaging, X-ray imaging, sensing, photocatalysis, and assistive technologies. He has authored numerous high-impact publications, including papers in Nature and Nature Nanotechnology on topics such as lanthanide-doped nanocrystals and high-resolution imaging techniques. His contributions have earned him awards including the Royal Society of Chemistry Centenary Prize in 2024, the NUS University Research Recognition Award, and the President’s Science Award. He serves in editorial and leadership roles in the field of materials chemistry and maintains active collaborations across institutions in Singapore and internationally.
