About Xinyi

Associate Professor Xinyi Su is a clinician-scientist at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, where she holds a tenured appointment in the Department of Ophthalmology. She serves as Senior Consultant Vitreo-retinal Surgeon at the National University Hospital (NUH) and Co-Director of the Centre for Innovation and Precision Eye Health at NUS. Su also holds the position of Executive Director at the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB), A*STAR, with joint appointments as Research Director of the Translational Retinal Research Laboratory at IMCB, Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Mechanobiology Institute (MBI), NUS, and Clinician-Scientist at the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI). Her academic background includes a BSc with First Class Honours, MBBChir, and PhD from the University of Cambridge, along with MRCP (UK) and FAMS qualifications. Her PhD was supervised by Ashok Venkitaraman. Su’s research focuses on regenerative therapeutics for retinal diseases, including the development of thermosensitive hydrogels for vitreo-retinal surgery and drug delivery, retinal pigment epithelium and photoreceptor cell transplantation using induced pluripotent stem cells, and RNAi-based gene therapies for inherited retinal degenerations. She has secured over SGD25 million in competitive research funding and holds multiple patents. Key publications include work in Nature Biomedical Engineering (2019) on thermogelling polymers for retinal detachment repair, Nature Communications (2022) on bio-functional polymers, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (2023) on single-cell transcriptomics of transplanted retinal cells. Su has received awards such as the National Medical Research Council Clinician-Scientist Investigator Award (2022), the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine Young Researcher of the Year Award (2022), and the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of Singapore Award (2021). She is a member of The Macular Society and serves on committees including the Executive Committee of the Stem Cell Society, Singapore.
