About Yasmeen

Yasmeen Abu-Laban is Professor and Canada Research Chair in the Politics of Citizenship and Human Rights in the Department of Political Science at the University of Alberta, and a Fellow at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research. She holds a PhD in Political Science from Carleton University (1996), an MA in Political Science from Carleton University, and a BA (Honours) in Political Science from the University of Alberta. Her research interests centre on the Canadian and comparative dimensions of diversity and representation; immigration policies and politics; multiculturalism, human rights and anti-racism; as well as surveillance, advanced digital technologies and border control. Abu-Laban is the author or editor of nine scholarly books and has published over 150 articles, chapters and reviews. Recent books include Resisting the Dehumanization of Refugees (2024, co-edited), Containing Diversity: Canada and the Politics of Immigration in the Twenty-First Century (2023, co-authored), and Assessing Multiculturalism in Global Comparative Perspective (2023, co-edited). She has served as President of the Canadian Political Science Association (2016-2017), Vice-President of the International Political Science Association (2018-2021), and President of the Canadian Ethnic Studies Association (2022-2024). Abu-Laban is the recipient of the Killam Award for Excellence in Mentoring and the Faculty of Arts Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching and Mentorship, as well as earlier honours including the Killam Annual Professorship (2013-2014) and McCalla Research Professorship (2006-2007).

Her contributions to the field include leadership in academic associations and extensive scholarship on topics such as ethnic and gender politics, nationalism, globalization, processes of racialization, and multiculturalism. She has taught courses including POL S 456 and POL S 556 on the Politics of International Migration.
