Dr. Yatinesh Kumari is an Associate Professor at the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Monash University Malaysia, where she joined as a Lecturer in Physiology in April 2013. She obtained her Bachelor of Science, Master of Science in Zoology, and Doctor of Philosophy in Neuroscience from the University of Lucknow, India. Her PhD research examined the brain's master clock regulating sleep-wake cycles, hormone regulation, feeding behavior, and adaptation to environmental changes, including neural mechanisms such as peptide regulation and neuronal recruitment in circadian rhythms. Prior to Monash, she served as a Research Assistant at the Department of Zoology, University of Lucknow, and as Senior and Junior Research Fellow at the DST IRHPA Center for Excellence in Biological Rhythm Research there.
Dr. Kumari's research investigates the pharmacological potential of plant-based compounds, focusing on their molecular and neural mechanisms to develop therapeutic strategies for neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, epilepsy, and sleep disorders. She has secured more than 20 fully-funded research grants as principal or co-investigator, published numerous articles and reviews in high-impact journals, and established laboratory techniques such as animal model development, primary neuronal culture, bioimaging, histology, immunohistochemistry, and gene expression analysis using rodents, zebrafish, and birds. Key publications include 'Exploring β-caryophyllene: a non-psychotropic cannabinoid's potential in mitigating cognitive impairment induced by sleep deprivation' (2025), 'The immunomodulatory effects of classical psychedelics: A systematic review of preclinical studies' (2025), 'Unveiling the Connection between Gut Microbiome and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)' (2025), and 'Health benefits, pharmacological properties, and metabolism of cannabinol: A comprehensive review' (2024). Her achievements include awards such as the Silver Medal at ITEX 2018 for 'LANCTOS 75 TM for Mental Wellness', Bronze Medal at PECIPTA 2017, Vice Chancellor Special Team Commendation Award for Diversity and Inclusion (2021), PVC Commendation Award for Innovations in Teaching (2020), and Malaysian Society of Neurosciences Best Publication Award (2018). Dr. Kumari supervises higher degree by research students, acts as a peer reviewer for high-ranking international journals, delivers public lectures like 'The Future of Neuroprotection: Targeting Neuroinflammation' (2025), and engages in community outreach promoting equity in education and healthcare. She is a life member of the Malaysian Society for Neurosciences and has filed patents, including one for a pharmaceutical composition treating male sexual dysfunction (PI 2017702515, 2017).
