Professor Yongxian Luo is Professor in Chinese Studies at the Asia Institute, Faculty of Arts, University of Melbourne. His academic background includes a PhD from The Australian National University, a Master's degree by coursework from The Australian National University, a Graduate Diploma from Guangxi Normal University, and a Bachelor's degree. On Google Scholar, he is listed as Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne with research interests in Tai-Kadai, Comparative Tai, and Southeast Asian Linguistics. His publications have received 368 citations. As a member of the Centre for Contemporary Chinese Studies, his research focuses on China, Chinese societies, and Chinese economies in the 21st century.
Professor Luo has authored and edited five books along with several dozen articles and book chapters on Kra-Dai (also known as Tai-Kadai) languages, Hmong-Mien languages, Sino-Tibetan languages, Austroasiatic languages, and linguistic features of Chinese. Notable among his key publications is the co-edited volume The Tai-Kadai Languages (Routledge, 2008) with Anthony V. N. Diller and Jerold A. Edmondson, which provides comprehensive coverage of the language family. He is also the author of A Grammar of Zoulei, Southwest China (Peter Lang, 2018), a detailed grammatical description of the Zoulei language spoken in Southwest China. Other significant works include "A Thousand-Mile Journey Starts with One Step – Metaphorical Mappings of the ‘Foot’ in Chinese," "Metaphorical Mappings of the ‘Eye’ in Chinese," and contributions to projects preserving China's minority languages. His specialization in Sino-Tibetan linguistics, Tai-Kadai linguistics, and Southeast Asian linguistics has advanced comparative studies and documentation of linguistic diversity across Asia.
