About Yu

Yu Lei is Centennial Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Connecticut, with affiliation in the Biomedical Engineering program. He earned a B.S. and M.S. in Chemical Engineering from Sichuan University in China and a Ph.D. in Chemical and Environmental Engineering from the University of California, Riverside in 2004. Prior to joining UConn, he served as Assistant Professor in the Division of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Center of Biotechnology at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore from 2004 to 2006. At UConn, he was Assistant Professor from 2006 to 2011 before advancing to his current role.

Dr. Lei’s research focuses on the development of biosensors, gas sensors, bionanotechnology, environmental biotechnology, high-temperature nanomaterials-based sensing, and microfluidic-based biosensors, including the synthesis and application of nanostructured materials for detecting biological and chemical species in medicine, the environment, food safety, and agriculture. He has received awards including the Castleman Term Professorship, Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry Top Cited Article Awards, University of California-Riverside Graduate Research Award, and Distinguished Chancellor Fellowship. His professional activities include service on editorial boards for Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology and Analytical Letters, as well as guest editing special issues on nanotechnology and biosensors. Selected publications include reviews and studies on fluorescent explosive detection, microbial biosensors, electrospun nanofibers for glucose sensing, and high-temperature gas sensors.
