About Yuta

Yuta Yamate is affiliated with the Graduate School of Fisheries Science and Environmental Studies at Nagasaki University. He received his Ph.D. in Fisheries Science from Nagasaki University in March 2023. Since April 2022, he has held a position at the university, conducting research within the Faculty of Fisheries and the Institute of Integrated Science and Technology. His work focuses on the biology and ecology of cephalopods, with particular emphasis on small coastal octopuses including the Japanese pygmy octopus (Octopus parvus) and the Japanese blue-lined octopus (Hapalochlaena cf. fasciata). Key areas of investigation include seasonal occurrence patterns, arm loss frequency and its relation to mating behaviors, tetrodotoxin profiles and utilization against predators, venom gland characteristics, and body size and maturation patterns.

Yamate has authored or co-authored multiple peer-reviewed publications, often serving as corresponding author. These include “Seasonal occurrence of Japanese pygmy octopus Octopus parvus in the intertidal zone” (Fisheries Science, 2021), “Levels and distribution of tetrodotoxin in the blue-lined octopus Hapalochlaena fasciata in Japan” (Journal of Molluscan Studies, 2021), “Tetrodotoxin Profiles in Xanthid Crab Atergatis floridus and Blue-Lined Octopus Hapalochlaena cf. fasciata from the Same Site in Nagasaki, Japan” (Toxins, 2023), “Verification of tetrodotoxin utilisation against predators in Japanese blue-lined octopus Hapalochlaena cf. fasciata” (Molluscan Research, 2024), “Seasonal and Sex Differences in Arm Loss Frequency in Two Small Coastal Octopus Species” (Zoological Science, 2025), and “Enlarged venom-gland size in males of the Japanese blue-lined Octopus Hapalochlaena cf. fasciata” (Marine Biology, 2026). He has also contributed to presentations at events such as the Cephalopod International Advisory Council conference and various Japanese society meetings. Yamate has received research support through grants including the JSPS Young Researcher program (2023–2028), Sasakawa Scientific Research Grant (2020–2021), and others from the Japan Science Society and related foundations.
