Desmond Felix

Desmond Felix is a historian, lecturer, and doctoral researcher in History at Goldsmiths, University of London, where his research examines the formation of Black British ethnic identity in contemporary cultural contexts. His work explores how identity is constructed, negotiated, and experienced within Black British communities through qualitative research, including interviews and focus groups conducted across the United Kingdom. With more than fifteen years of teaching experience across higher education, further education, and widening participation programmes, Desmond has taught History, Politics, Global Studies, and study skills at a range of institutions. He is currently a Faculty Lecturer with IFSA (Institute for Study Abroad), delivering courses on migration, British society, and contemporary history to international students. He has previously taught at the University of Roehampton, New City College, Oxford Summer Courses, and CIEE London. His teaching and research interests include Black British history, migration, race and ethnicity, identity formation, community histories, empire, and contemporary Britain. He is committed to research-led and inclusive pedagogy, encouraging students to engage critically with historical sources, historiographical debates, and questions of social justice and representation. Desmond has presented his research at academic and public forums, including events hosted by the Centre of Work, Organisation and Society (CWOS) at the University of Essex, the Williams Project at Chigwell School, and the 2024 Black History Month Lecture at CIEE London. He is a member of the Royal Historical Society and is dedicated to fostering collaboration between academic institutions and local communities through public history and knowledge exchange.
