Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov was a biologist and immunologist known for his research on immunity. He discovered phagocytosis and shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1908 for his work on immunity. At the time of the award he was affiliated with the Institut Pasteur in France.
