Adjunct Faculty, First-Year Writing (Dual Enrollment)
OVERVIEW
The Department of Writing Studies at Montclair State University is seeking adjunct instructors to teach dual enrollment First-Year Writing courses in Newark high schools.
These courses are offered through the Red Hawks Rising Teacher Academy, a partnership between Montclair State University, the Newark Board of Education, and the American Federation of Teachers. The program encourages high school students to explore teaching as a profession and supports their goal of returning to teach in their communities after completing their post-secondary education. Courses are taught by MSU adjunct faculty and supported by Supplemental Instruction Mentors from the Center for Academic Success and Tutoring. Credits earned may be applied toward an undergraduate degree at Montclair State University, and students maintaining a 3.0 GPA are guaranteed admission to MSU.
Instructors will join a large, collaborative program committed to providing strong, process-oriented writing instruction and support to diverse learners.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Faculty will teach First-Year Writing courses, including College Writing I (fall) and College Writing II (spring), to high school seniors. Courses are 14 weeks and follow the University and the NBOE’s academic calendars. Instructional time is M/W or T/Th from 1:40 PM - 3:05 PM.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Required:
- MA or MFA or equivalent in Writing, English, or related field
Preferred:
- Record of success teaching first-year writing in a diverse, multi-ethnic environment.
- Experience teaching in a K-12 setting
- Significant coursework and/or professional development experience in composition studies.
