Adjunct, Targeted ESL and Academic ESOL
Position Summary
Targeted ESL and Academic ESOL Adjunct faculty teach classes focusing on specific language, pre-academic, and academic English skills. Faculty develop course materials, provide instruction, and administer assessments to prepare students for academic reading and writing and to promote communication skills. Adjunct faculty should have a deep understanding of second language acquisition, effective teaching strategies, and a commitment to student success to ensure instruction will meet the diverse needs of a multicultural student population.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following are the functions essential to performing this job:
- Develop and deliver engaging and rigorous instruction in intermediate to advanced ESOL courses.
- Provide student-centered, interactive instruction that promotes communication in English.
- Actively engage students in critical thinking, meta-cognitive processes, and advancement of critical communication skills.
- Design materials and assessments that align with the learning objectives and outcomes for college-bound students.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, progress, and grades in accordance with college policies.
- Support the mission and values of the community college, contributing to a positive and inclusive learning environment.
- Submit a requested syllabi and other instructional materials.
- Use the FCC email account provided for them to communicate with the College, faculty, staff, and students. Share this information with their students.
Required Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, English, or a related field from an accredited institution.
- Experience teaching adults in ESOL, English, or related subjects.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience teaching college-bound ESL students.
- Strong knowledge of second language acquisition theories and effective instructional methodologies.
- Experience teaching academic reading and writing and knowledge of online research techniques.
- Experience with online teaching and familiarity with learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard, Canvas).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse student populations.
- Familiar with the specific needs and challenges faced by ESL students in higher education.
