The goal of the Johns Hopkins Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Fellowship is to train the next leaders in the emergency ultrasound community. Upon completing their fellowship, fellows will achieve the skills necessary for ultrasound program administration, education and curriculum development, research, and advanced ultrasound skills to assist in clinical decision-making.

Objectives:
ADVANCED EMERGENCY ULTRASOUND KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL
The fellow will gain proficiency in core and advanced ultrasound knowledge and skill, including the acquisition and interpretation of bedside ultrasound imaging, and clinical application.
- Fellow will be responsible for performing at least 1000 ultrasound studies in a variety of applications during the academic year.
- Fellows will participate in didactics throughout the year following a curriculum developed by the ultrasound fellowship director.
- Fellows will participate in 4 hours of weekly image review with faculty, for both education and quality assurance. They will also perform independent quality image review of ultrasound scans performed by other trainees.
TEACHING AND EDUCATION
The fellow will gain experience in teaching point-of-care ultrasound to learners at all levels of training, including medical students, advanced practice providers, residents, and attendings.
- The fellow will be responsible for leading or assisting in teaching efforts led by the emergency ultrasound division, including small and large group didactics and bedside teaching.
- Produce educational content with a minimum requirement of presenting one lecture.
- Build skills in curriculum development for an ultrasound educational program.
ADMINISTRATION
The fellow will gain experience in point-of-care ultrasound administrative skills necessary to run a clinical and educational program.
- This includes machine maintenance, workflow, QI, billing/coding, and credentialling.
- Fellow will be responsible for assisting in ultrasound administrative needs of the department, participate in administrative meetings with the ultrasound division, IT, hospital administration, and receive additional education on these topics.
SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY
The fellow will gain experience in research and engage in a scholarly activity, including:
- Completion and submission of a research project as an abstract or presentation at local, regional, or national society meeting, and/or publication of a manuscript.
CLINICAL
- Continue to practice emergency medicine as faculty of the department of emergency medicine for a contracted 800 hours during their fellowship year.
By the end of the fellowship, the fellow will be qualified and prepared to achieve the ABEM Focus Practice Designation in Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasound.
Activities requiring faculty supervision: The Fellowship Director will supervise all fellow functions, excluding clinical work where the fellow will work autonomously as a board-eligible physician under the direction of the clinical leadership. The program is under the administrative guidance of the Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Vice Chair of Education. All ultrasound faculty members will serve as educators, mentors, and advisors for the fellow during their fellowship year. Other emergency medicine faculty may function as mentors if the fellow has a specific niche that they would like to pursue during their ultrasound training. Fellows will have graduated responsibility, and the level of direct supervision will be dependent on the fellow's level of expertise and need for supervision as the year progresses. There will be quarterly meetings between the fellowship director and fellow to ensure that the fellow is meeting benchmarks, progressing with scholarly work, and achieving their own professional goals.
Qualifications
Prerequisites: The fellow must be a board-eligible or board-certified graduate from an ACGME-accredited Emergency Medicine residency program or ABEM-approved combined program.
Prior Experience: Must be in good standing clinically with their residency program or as a practicing attending. At the time of acceptance, applicant should be credentialed and meet criteria for privileging in the basic applications of emergency ultrasound. Engagement in teaching, scholarly activities or research, preferably in ultrasound, is desired. Applicant should be able to demonstrate an interest and commitment to learning advanced emergency ultrasound, and should have a personal goal they would like to achieve during their fellowship year.
Application: Applications should be submitted through the Society of Clinical Ultrasound Fellowship application portal. This must include a CV, Cover Letter, and at least 2 letters of recommendation.
Acceptance: Application review will be completed by the fellowship director and ultrasound faculty. Candidates will be selected to interview based on their clinical and academic records. Interviews will be conducted by the fellowship director, emergency ultrasound faculty, emergency department clinical directors, and vice-chair of education. A rank list will be finalized by the emergency ultrasound fellowship leadership group, and accepted applicants will be selected through the NRMP match, following the emergency medicine fellowship NRMP guidelines.
