The Department of Medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria (UICOMP) is seeking an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) to provide comprehensive primary care in the outpatient clinic at Positive Health Solutions (PHS). PHS is a regional healthcare program serving 15 counties in Central Illinois and provides integrated primary care alongside specialized services, including HIV care, for a medically and socially complex patient population. The clinic serves a diverse community and offers inclusive care for individuals of all genders, sexual orientations, and backgrounds.

PHS utilizes a collaborative, interdisciplinary care model, with APRNs working closely with physicians, infectious disease specialists, nurses, case managers, outreach staff, and other support services to ensure coordinated, whole‑person care. Clinical services are delivered at two fixed locations in Peoria and Bloomington, as well as through a mobile health unit, and include primary medical care, psychiatric services, oral health care, nutritional assessments, medical case management, and referrals within a robust network of specialty providers.

The APRN provides general primary care services for assigned patients in accordance with established scope‑of‑practice guidelines. Responsibilities include conducting comprehensive health assessments, diagnosing common acute and chronic conditions, developing and implementing treatment plans, and prescribing therapies as appropriate within medical staff privileges and University‑affiliated hospital policies. Experience or interest in caring for patients with complex medical or social needs is valued, and training and collaborative support are available for specialty aspects of care.

Position Summary

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) provides comprehensive health care for assigned patients/community as determined by scope of practice guidelines and specialty. This includes completion of a health assessment, determining diagnosis, planning and prescribing treatment within the parameters of medical staff privileges at the University of Illinois and area of expertise. The APRN participates in the educational experiences of nursing students, medical students, residents and other health care disciplines.

The APRN is required to have and maintain a faculty appointment in order to receive clinical privileges to practice at the University of Illinois.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage the care of patients within assigned area and/or area of expertise and within parameters of medical staff privileges.
  • Obtain relevant patient health history. Study and interpret patient tests and records.
  • Perform physical exam and record findings.
  • Perform various diagnostic, preventive and/or therapeutic procedures and/or order special screenings and developmental or laboratory tests to diagnose conditions; interpret results.
  • Prescribe/order appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions and develop a treatment plan.
  • Develop an educational plan for patient/family.
  • Assist with scheduling of patients for upcoming procedures including coordinating with other services (division, departments) and completion of necessary documentation, scheduling forms and clearance.
  • Order appropriate consultation/referral.
  • Determine effectiveness of treatment plan with documentation of treatment provided and patient outcomes.
  • Reassess and modify plan with patient/family and treatment team within the parameters of medical staff privileges.
  • Participates in the educational experiences of nursing students, medical students, residents and other healthcare disciplines. By being involved in case conferences, serving as a preceptor and mentor, assisting with curriculum development and instruction.
  • The Advanced Practice Nurse is required to have and maintain a faculty appointment in order to receive clinical privileges to practice at the University of Illinois.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing or Doctorate of Nursing Practice required.
  • Graduation from accredited APRN program.
  • Current license as a Professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice.
  • Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Staff Nursing experience in Internal Medicine preferred.
