BASIC FUNCTION & RESPONSIBILITY
- Provide day-to-day technical and administrative supervision of personnel at assigned satellite clinic laboratories.
- Assure competency of Allied Health Associate Supervisor, Phlebotomists, Phlebotomist Specialists, and Lab Techs.
- Model professional behavior and serve as a resource for Medical Directors, Laboratory Directors, Clinic Managers and POC Manager.
- Perform phlebotomy and order entry as needed.
- For Satellite Support labs, performs functions of the CLIA General Supervisor and may act as Testing Personnel.
- General Supervisor
- Accessible to testing personnel at all times testing is performed to provide on-site, telephone, or electronic support.
- Provides day-to-day supervision of personnel performing high complexity testing.
- Monitors test analyses and specimen examination to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
- Fulfills certain responsibilities as delegated by the Lab Director and/or Technical Supervisor. These may include, but is not limited to:
- Resolving technical problems and ensuring corrective actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
- Ensuring patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly.
- Providing orientation to all testing personnel.
- Evaluating and documenting the performance of all testing personnel as required.
Testing Personnel
Testing Personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance, and reporting test results. They should only perform those tests that are authorized by the Laboratory Director and that are within the individual's skill level as determined by education, training or experience, and technical abilities. Testing Personnel are also responsible for:
- Following the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient results.
- Maintaining records which demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
- Adhering to the laboratory's Quality Control policies and documenting all Quality Control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and instrument maintenance.
- Following the laboratory?s policies, including taking and documenting corrective actions, whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
- Being able to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or test result reporting and correcting the problem or notifying the appropriate supervisor.
- Documenting all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
- If required by route of qualification, performing high complexity testing only under the on-site direct supervision of a General Supervisor.
- Perform various waived and non-waived clinical laboratory analyses from patient specimens, in order to obtain clinical data for use by medical staff in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Customer Service
Provide total customer focus to meet the needs of every customer, internal and external, medical staff, laboratory staff, patients and families
Specimen Collection
Perform phlebotomy or order entry procedures when needed to assist phlebotomists
Specimen Handling
Transport, label, centrifuge, aliquot, distribute, store and prepare laboratory specimens for testing within Pathology Department and reference laboratories.
Computer Data Entry
Enter laboratory test orders and results into the Laboratory Information System
- Monitor critical values and call results to medical staff using established lab policies.
- Perform add-on requests by established policy.
Quality control
- Ensure accuracy of results. Perform daily quality control analysis with documentation of completion and of action taken for out-of-range values.
- Maintain analyzer maintenance and calibrations according to instrument manual and accreditation guidelines
- Maintain proficiency in all tests that you analyze and report

- Maintain a smooth efficient operating laboratory while meeting the needs of customers, laboratory supervisor, laboratory and medical directors in a variety of duties.
- Serve as a resource for questions regarding specimen collection, handling or ordering.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain expertise in all areas under supervision to be able to adequately assess performance of staff and to provide assistance in event of short staffing situations.
- Schedule work assignments, maintain adequate and equitable staffing levels to ensure delivery of phlebotomy and laboratory services.
- Receive and coordinate sick calls and vacation requests.
- Provide staff with unit orientation, analytical procedure training, MI Chart training and assist in phlebotomy skills training.
- Assure competency of staff thru observation and participation in proficiency and competency programs and continuing education requirements.
- Provide Annual Performance Review for each staff member. Monitor staff MLearning plans and verify UMHS mandatory competencies are met.
- Monitor and participate in on-going quality control/quality assurance activities for equipment, automated and non-automated.
- Assure UMHS laboratory accreditation.
- Participate in senior staff meetings.
- Assist with hiring of new staff.
In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.
A baccalaureate degree and/or a combination of education and experience.
Minimum of five years experience working in phlebotomy or laboratory setting.
Must have the ability to organize and prioritize work, communicate effectively, recognize problems and take appropriate action, and work independently.
Must be able to work in a diverse workforce.
This full time, 40 hour position is on the day shift and will require rotating weekends, holidays and on call. This position is exempt and may require more than 40 hours to accomplish extra duties.
