Position Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Ambulatory Care Technician – Certified in the Department of Pediatrics within the New Jersey Medical School (NJMS).

The Ambulatory Care Technician (ACT) provides medical assistance to nurses and physicians in the overall care of patients, including technical procedures such as phlebotomy, and intramuscular and subcutaneous injections. The ACT functions under the clinical guidance of the Physician and/or APN when performing clinical tasks during patient care. Demonstrates competency in all skills related to the performance of patient care. Assists with maintaining an inventory of examination/procedure room supplies. Assists in the organization of efficient patient flow. Provides HIV, STI, and pregnancy testing, and processes authorizations and referrals, as needed. The ACT demonstrates problem-solving skills as they relate to patient care activities. The individual displays responsible behaviors, communicates effectively to others and functions as a member of the healthcare team.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Participates in the care of the patient, under the clinical guidance of the Physician and/or APN and in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Performs delegated procedures common to the specialty area in a safe, effective, and efficient manner according to Clinical Practice Policy and Procedures.
  • Assists patients to exam room and prepares patients for examination, including assisting providers in patient procedures/treatments/examinations, (preparation, positioning, supplies, equipment). Problem solves obstacles throughout the process and notifies manager and patients of wait time.
  • Obtains and records patient's vital signs, chief complaint, allergies, medical history, surgical history, family history, as well as sexual history, and gynecological (GYN) history..
  • Incorporates trauma informed medical assistance to nurses and physicians in the overall care of patients, including technical procedures such as phlebotomy, and intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Graduation of a post-secondary medical assisting education program accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Must be able to lift or exert force up to twenty (20) pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Office environment and community.
  • Moderate noise.
  • Perform delegated procedures common to the specialty area in a safe, effective, and efficient manner according to Clinical Practice Policy and Procedures under clinical supervision.
  • Participates in community service projects, events, and other special projects within the Division, including weekends and evenings as needed.
