AMSTI Specialist
Overview
The Alabama Mathematics, Science, and Technology Initiative (AMSTI) through the Alabama Department of Education (ALSDE) at Auburn University is excited to fill the role of a 6-12th grade Math Specialist. This position supports ALSDE's initiative to improve math and science teaching statewide. This position supports Alabama educators and students in learning STEM through doing STEM. This position enacts that motto by providing teachers and schools in East Alabama with professional development, education support, instructional resources, and other needed resources.
Responsibilities
- Facilitate and/or participate in professional learning for teachers and administrators based on assignments and/or LEA needs, including online options.
- Assist AMSTI-ALSDE in developing and maintaining standardized, pre-approved professional learning opportunities and supporting resources for AMSTI and/or for the ALSDE, including online options, and submitting them to ALDSE for approval.
- Provide ongoing professional learning to AMSTI lead teachers, certified AMSTI facilitators, and instructional coachers.
- Assist IHE's with planning and conducting preservice education, continuing education, and outreach activities.
- Participate in AMSTI professional learning activities and staff meetings conducted by the ALDE and site director, unless prior approval for absence is granted.
- Provide frequent, ongoing support and coaching to teachers, AMSTI lead teachers, certified AMSTI facilitators, coaches, and /or LEA needs.
- Assist AMSTI teachers in effectively using common planning time and Professional Learning Communities to improve instruction.
- Assist in recruiting new AMSTI teachers and/or facilitators.
- Research the effects of current math, science, and/or technology practices in AMSTI classrooms, as requested by AMSTI-ALSDE.
- Coordinate work through the AMSTI site director, collaborate with other specialists and communicate with all stakeholders.
- Achieve and maintain proficiency in all standards, pedagogical and content knowledge, and AMSTI lessons and practices through AMSTI-ALSDE and approved outside professional learning opportunities based on the requirements.
- Work with general and materials managers to make site-level decisions based on teacher needs and requests.
- Provide feedback to AMSTI-ALSDE regarding customization of kits and resources to make them teacher and classroom friendly.
- Maintain records (including financial) and complete paperwork in a timely manner, utilizing structure in Monday.com.
- Participate in the development, maintenance, and promotion of AMSTI resources according to the resource development and PR guidelines.
- Other duties as assigned by the AMSTI site director or AMSTI-ALSDE.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the program and 4 years of experience in the design, implementation, delivery and management of educational programs/services.
- A Master's degree may be required for positions requiring specialized knowledge.
- Some positions may require content specific certification and licensing.
