Position description

The Department of Pathology at the University of California, San Diego is committed to academic excellence within the faculty, staff, and student body, and seeks an academic clinical pathologist (physician or physician-scientist) to join the Division of Laboratory and Genomic Medicine to serve as the Director of the Clinical Coagulation and Hemostasis section of the UC San Diego Health Clinical Laboratories.

The successful candidate will be an experienced and motivated leader who will provide medical and technical oversight and serve as primary clinical consultant for all general and specialized clinical coagulation and hemostasis laboratory services at La Jolla-Jacobs Medical Center (including the region's only NCI-designated cancer center), Hillcrest Medical Center, and the state-of-the art Center for Advanced Laboratory Medicine (CALM), which also supports our outreach/reference laboratory programs and UC San Diego Health's expanding clinical integration network and hospital partners.

The successful candidate will leverage their expertise in the diagnosis and management of bleeding and thrombotic disorders to develop, validate and implement advanced and innovative diagnostic tests/profiles, ensure high standards of quality and patient safety, promote laboratory stewardship and advance best practices, and provide key interpretative and consultation services to support overall patient care and the complex, high acuity clinical programs of UC San Diego Health and affiliates (trauma/critical care, comprehensive stroke center, cardiovascular surgery/ interventional cardiology, high-risk obstetrics/neonatology, hematology/oncology, center for bleeding and clotting disorders, solid organ/bone marrow transplantation, cellular/gene therapy, sickle cell/thalassemia clinic, and hemophilia and thrombosis center).

The successful candidate will also participate in the teaching of medical students, medical laboratory scientist trainees, pathology residents, and clinical fellows (including those in ACGME-accredited hematopathology and hematology/oncology training programs).

The appropriate series and appointment at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level will be based on the candidate's background and experience.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Candidates must have a MD or equivalent or a MD/PhD in the biological sciences, chemistry/biochemistry, molecular biology/ genetics, experimental pathology, or another health-related field.

Candidates must have or be eligible for a California medical license or equivalent certification/permit as determined by the Medical Board of California.

Candidates must be board certified or eligible for certification by the American Board of Pathology (ABPath) in clinical pathology (CP), anatomic pathology/clinical pathology (AP/CP), or equivalent.

Alternatively, candidates with current certification by another ABMS-approved primary medical specialty board (e.g., American Board of Internal Medicine [ABIM] or American Board of Pediatrics [ABP]), must also be certified or eligible for subspecialty certification in transfusion medicine (ABPath), hematopathology (ABPath), hematology (ABIM), pediatric hematology-oncology (ABP), or equivalent.

Preferred qualifications

Candidates with a minimum of three years of clinical practice experience in clinical coagulation and hemostasis are preferred.

Candidates with a track record of evidence of scholarly contributions in clinical, translational and/or basic research, are encouraged to apply.
