Job Description

The College of Veterinary Medicine at MU is on a mission to educate and train outstanding clinicians and scientists, generate new knowledge, engage stakeholders, and foster economic growth, all of which promote and protect the health and welfare of animals and people. Our Doctor of Veterinary Medicine professional program boasts a unique curricular structure, which provides nearly two years of hands-on training in the college’s general and specialty clinics. Additionally, the College is a leader in the training Undergraduate, Masters, and PhD students in the areas of Biomedical Sciences and Veterinary Pathobiology. Simply put, our mission is to Teach, Heal, Discover, and Serve.

The Department of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery is dedicated to developing and disseminating knowledge to improve the health and well-being of animals and people through instruction, innovative research, service, and leadership. The department is home to the college’s Veterinary Health Center, a state-of-the-art teaching and medical services faculty, where our faculty provide clinical care, teach, and develop innovative treatments and therapies for both small and large animals.

We are currently seeking applications for a full-time faculty position in Surgical Oncology. We are open to applicants at any academic rank (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor) and either tenure-track or non-tenure track.

This appointment’s primary teaching and clinical focus is providing faculty support to the Surgical Oncology section in the Veterinary Health Center (VHC). The Surgical Oncology section functions as part of a multi-disciplinary, integrated Oncology service, with strong support from Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncology. Intermittent, limited support to the Soft Tissue Surgery section may be required. As part of this appointment, the successful candidate will:

  • Provide clinical instruction of students (professional), interns, and residents in surgical oncology, soft tissue surgery, and perioperative medicine utilizing the caseload of the VHC.
  • Contribute to the professional and graduate curriculum by participating in classroom and laboratory instruction. Opportunities for online instruction are possible.
  • Represent the University, College, and VHC through outreach activities for animal-owning public, referring veterinarians, or other relevant stakeholders.
  • Share with other faculty and house officers in after-hours call.
  • Participate in the discovery process by participating in clinical, resident or house officer research (NTT-teaching). Tenure track faculty are expected to develop a research program related to surgical oncology, perioperative medicine, or other related discipline. Collaborative research and research mentorship are greatly encouraged.
  • Participate in faculty governance activities.
  • Other duties as needed in support of the service, Department, College, and/or University.

Distribution of effort will be based on the successful candidate’s qualifications, career goals, and the needs of the Surgery and Oncology sections.

  • Diplomate status or eligibility for certification by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons or the European College of Veterinary Surgeons.

Candidates will be evaluated on:

  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a regular or faculty license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Missouri.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain DEA and BNDD certificates.
  • Additional Graduate training (Master or PhD) is desirable, especially for candidates considering a tenure track position.
