Assistant/Associate Professor, Soft Tissue Surgery, Academic Clinician (AC) Track
The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Clinical Sciences and Advanced Medicine, Section of Surgery invites qualified individuals to apply for an open faculty position in the Academic Clinician (AC) track in Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.
Faculty members in the Academic Clinician (AC) track are primarily devoted to clinical service (42 weeks a year) in the Matthew J Ryan Veterinary Hospital and participate in the clinical instruction of veterinary students, interns, and residents. Clinic time will be divided between soft tissue surgery and surgical oncology, but the amount of service in each area is flexible. Time away from clinical service is used for professional development, study for Board preparation (if needed), citizenship to the Department, and didactic teaching. Developing or maintaining an independent scholarship or research is not a focus of the AC track, is not a requirement for reappointment or promotion, and should not detract from excellence in clinical service and teaching. Faculty AC positions are long-term, non-tenured Associated Faculty positions with reappointment every three years. Promotion along the ladder of the University Academic ranks is available. The successful candidate is expected to have a history of or potential as an exemplary clinician and educator.
The successful candidate will join Penn Vet's Section of Surgery, which employs eight faculty and seven residents. Penn Vet offers an opportunity to practice in a cutting-edge academic service within a busy urban academic teaching hospital staffed with specialists in all areas, including outstanding anesthesiology and critical care teams and a comprehensive canine and feline blood bank with an active donor program for optimal and complete peri-operative care. Mentorship and growth in the fields of renal transplantation, microvascular surgery, minimally invasive surgery, advanced upper and lower urinary tract surgery, and interventional radiology is available depending on an applicant's interest. Surgeons enjoy the benefits of the Rosenthal Imaging and Treatment Center, including multi-slice CT, MRI, a Varian linear accelerator with IMRT capability, as well as the recently renovated Richard Lichter emergency room and state-of-the-art Advanced Dentistry and Oral Surgery Suite.
Adjacent to the veterinary hospital are three world-class biomedical hospitals and research centers, which provide excellent opportunities for collaboration: The Perelman School of Medicine, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and the Wistar Institute.
The University provides a comprehensive and competitive benefits package, including multiple retirement savings options and tuition benefits for the candidate's spouse or dependent children. Philadelphia is a vibrant, historic, and welcoming city that is home to world-class museums, award-winning restaurants, diverse neighborhoods, and a thriving arts scene. The city offers endless opportunities for exploration and enrichment with easy access to New York and Washington DC, as well as the mountains and the shore.
